Demolition begins at Barnegat on historic Edwards School

This article touches my heart and truly marks the end of an era in Southern Ocean County as demolition begins at this historic school in Barnegat Township. Almost 100 years old, Elizabeth V Edwards School on Route 9 in Barnegat was a school for thousands of people who have attended classes there since 1930.

For me, it was my school when I first moved to Southern Ocean County. It was around 1975 and I was going to 4th grade when we moved to Barnegat and I had a new school to go to, it was Elizabeth V Edwards Elementary School right there on route 9 in Barnegat.

I still remember the staircase at the end of the building that you had to take to go from the first to the second floor. I remember the baseball fields behind the school where we had activities, and I remember we had our gym on the stage of the theater lol. Yes, our gymnasium was on the stage of the theater and the floor was real wood. When we played basketball, volleyball or dodgeball, we played in front of the seats, so it was like a mini stadium. The theater seats were also made of wood. It all had to be original from 1930. When we had a gym class, you just had to be careful not to fall on your side, I don’t think anyone ever did.

Edwards School definitely belonged to a different era from today’s schools and now it seems the time for the old primary school has come as the demolition has begun. According to a recent Patch article, “The historic building is believed to be haunted, and the crew of the Syfy TV show ‘Ghost Hunters’ spent four cold days at the school in 2014.” Personally I’ve never seen ghosts, but I had tests that scared me lol

According to the patch “Demolition began on the rear of the building on October 10, according to a report by The sandpaper. The report also indicates that the district plans to preserve the school’s artifacts.”

I have fun memories at Edwards School and will be interested to see what will replace the old school. Have you ever seen ghosts there? Let us know before Halloween!
