Frank Lloyd Wright’s Circular Sun House is for sale – DIRT

Featured in Robb Report and designed by a legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, this eye-catching Arizona residence is credited as the designer’s final project before his death in 1959. Composed of a series of overlapping concentric circles – and displaying crescents, circles and triangles cut into its curved block exterior concrete – the innovative structure was commissioned in 1967 by shipping magnate Norman Lykes and his wife Aimee; and it is one of 14 circular houses created by Wright during his long career.

Last sold to out-of-state buyer at auction for nearly $1.7 million in 2019 — and later went up for sale at nearly $8 million, before being renovated and turned into an Airbnb rental — the remarkable mid-century property has popped up again on the market, this time asking for less than $9 million.

Completed by Apprentice Wright John Rattenbury in 1967, the “Circular Sun House” – also known as “Lykes House” – was extensively updated and remodeled in the early 90s by the same architect, with no changes to the original footprint. In its current iteration, the three-bedroom, three-bathroom home has just over 3,000 square feet of split-level living space highlighted by slate floors, mahogany walls, expansive built-ins and winding corridors. Expansive arched windows also offer picturesque views of the canyon, mountain, and city lights.

Nestled on a rocky hillside parcel of land spanning just over an acre – in Phoenix’s Palm Canyon neighborhood, bordering the Phoenix Mountain Preserve – the stunning all-white desert abode is preceded by a porte-cochere with parking for two cars. Inside, a spacious living room with a massive fireplace and banquettes serves as the focal point, with an adjacent dining area connected to a functional kitchen fitted with stainless steel countertops and appliances.

A narrow spiral staircase goes upstairs to an office; and elsewhere in the house are a den and library, as well as a main retreat with a private balcony, plus a marble bathroom fitted with a walk-in closet, whirlpool tub and shower . Outside, the walled backyard is home to a crescent-shaped pool lined with mother-of-pearl tiles and an accompanying water feature surrounded by an expansive deck perfect for lounging and outdoor entertaining.
