in the first round, the tripartition of the political landscape

Each presidential election has its lessons. The 2022 vintage is no exception to the rule. Cruel for the candidates of the traditional parties of the Ve Republic, he replays a duel that many voters feared. The outgoing president, Emmanuel Macron, and the candidate of the National Rally, Marine Le Penreproduce the face-to-face of five years ago against a background of significant abstention in the first round.

Unsurprisingly, the departments where we voted the least are the overseas departments (55.93%). In Corsica, abstention exceeds 37%, part of the independence movement having called for a boycott of the ballot. And, as traditionally, it is in the departments of the South-West that the participation is the strongest with a record of 81.42% in Haute-Garonne.

Ranked first in 52 departments, Emmanuel Macron undoubtedly dominates this first round of the presidential election. While Marine Le Pen comes first in 42 departments. The third man in the ballot, the candidate of La France insoumise (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, won in 12 departments.

Small candidates struggled to exist

At the headquarters of La République en Marche, in Paris, LRM activists concerning the retransmission of the declaration of the candidate of La France insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, after the announcement of the results of the first round of the presidential election, on April 10 2022.

The MP for Pas-de-Calais exceeds the 38% mark in three departments, which have become, election after election, electoral grounds for the National Rally: Mayotte (42.67%), Aisne (39.27%) and Pas-de-Calais (38.68%). For the Head of State, it is also in an overseas territory that he displays his best score. With 40.51% of the votes cast, New Caledonia converted to macronism after the victory of the “no” in the referendum on independence. In mainland France, Hauts-de-Seine (37.11%), Mayenne (36.4%), Vendée (35.64%) and Maine-et-Loire (35.6%), followed by ‘Ille-et-Villaine (34.5%), who distributed to the candidate of La République en Marche (LRM) his best results. Sign that the particular attention to the overseas territories of Jean-Luc Mélenchon has borne fruit, the latter is widely acclaimed and even exceeds 50% of votes in Guadeloupe (56.16%), in Martinique ( 53.10%) and Guyana (50.59%). In mainland France, only Seine-Saint-Denis appears in this list (49.09%).

On the other side, the small candidates struggled to exist in this first round. Starting with the two candidates of the so-called government parties: Valérie Pécresse for Les Républicains and Anne Hidalgo for the Socialist Party. The first performs its only salient score in Wallis and Futuna with 25.28%. Its second best score is in Corrèze but it does not exceed the 10% mark (8.61%). The defeat is so colossal that it does not even reach 3% in five departments (Ariège, Guadeloupe, Réunion, Guyana, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon). The best score of the socialist candidate is in the Landes department, with 3.52% of the votes cast.
