The Twin Cities pickleball craze has attracted an Iowa-based company that is building huge indoor and outdoor venues in the area.

What is happening: West Des Moines-based Smash Park announced Tuesday that it will open two of its 30,000 square foot locations here.

Details: Smash Parks have pickleball courts, food, drink, ax throwing, duck bowling, karaoke, live music and other events, according to a statement.

The plot: Smash Park was not ready to give exact locations when finalizing land purchases, but a spokesperson said the company was considering Edina, Roseville, Woodbury and Maple Grove.

  • Construction could begin this summer with the first opening in 2023, she added.

Zoom out: Pickleball’s growing popularity means everyone can get in on the action.

  • Municipal parks departments add courts; Lifetime fitness is bet big on sports; and a local company recently converted a large warehouse in northeast Minneapolis into a food, beer and pickleball spot called Lucky Shots.
