Stranger Things was usually set in small-town America, but in Season 4, that notion dissipated as it became a much larger, globe-trotting adventure.
The massive cast of the Netflix hit has been split up this season, with some staying in different parts of America and some being sent away.
It’s probably no surprise that the Upside Down also gets a lot of time since it was the longest and most epic season, with the finale lasting over two hours.
But where is the series set and what locations were filmed during this fourth season? Read everything you need to know about the filming locations of Stranger Things.
Where does Stranger Things take place?
Until Season 4, almost all of Stranger Things took place in Hawkins, a fictional town in the real US state of Indiana.
But this final season changed everything, with most of the action taking place elsewhere. There was still a group we followed in Hawkins, but there were also California and Russia.
Where are Hawkins’ scenes filmed?
Since the beginning of the series, scenes set in Hawkins have been filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, where many studios and productions are located. Marvel movies are often filmed here, as are shows including The Walking Dead and Atlanta.
Specific locations used for filming in the Atlanta area include Emory University, which serves as the Hawkins Nation Laboratory, the old school building, Patrick Henry Middle School, which is used for both the show’s middle and high school, and 45 Pray Street in Douglasville, which is used for the Hawkins Police Station.
Where were the Russian scenes filmed?
Filming of Hopper, Joyce and Murray’s Season 4 scenes in Russia actually took place in Lithuania, including the centuries-old Lukiški Prison in Vilnius, which doubled as the prison where Hopper was held.
The place was now turned Airbnb to keep fans of the show going, so if you want to hang out in Hopper’s winter prison cell (and why wouldn’t you?), you can sign up now. The remaining snowy scenes of the season were also filmed in Vilnius and its surroundings.
Where were the California scenes filmed?
Season 4 also featured a storyline in California where Eleven, Will, Jonathan and Joyce moved there and Mike came to visit.
These scenes were reportedly filmed in Albuquerque In New Mexico, Eldorado High School doubled as the fictional Lenora Hills High School in California.
A particularly memorable scene set in an ice rink was filmed at Roller King, an ice rink in Albuquerque, while other California scenes were filmed around Los Lunas, a village in New Mexico’s Valencia County.
