The project “Lukiškės Prison 2.0” turns the former Vilnius Prison into a cultural center

This summer, 250 artists will unleash their creativity in the new entertainment center Lukiškių Prison 2.0.

Lukiškės Prison, a terrible place of imprisonment built by the Russian tsars, is located in the center of Vilnius. was reinvented as a filming location and a cultural and entertainment center. According to Lukiškės Prison 2.0 project, up to 250 artists will set up workshops, studios and creative spaces on the premises of the former prison, Go to Vilnius reports.

“Lukiškių jaėjimas 2.0” started the performance of the group “Solo Ansamblis” with more than 1000 spectators – for the first time in 9 months due to the constant quarantine. The follow-up to the project will include festivals, an open architecture event, film screenings, active leisure events and nationally recognized performances. Culture has the power to strengthen and transform Vilnius, says Martynas Butkevičius from the Lithuanian music agency 8 Days a Week, which is a project partner. He adds that their purpose is to make new emotional connections with the former prison, not to look back. Butkevičius believes that Lukiškių Prison 2.0 will be a helper of music, modern art, design and culture – all of which have been hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Immunity passports for large-scale events

Lukiškių Prison 2.0 is open daily from noon to midnight, but immunity passports are required to participate in all large-scale events. The site also has a separate testing point where visitors can perform a rapid antigen test.

In addition to cultural and entertainment events, the program offers visitors two unique guided tours. The day tour covers the architecture and history of the prison and the daily lives of the prisoners. A night trip with a flashlight is suitable for those who are not weak but want to experience the gloom of confinement.
