Woman arrested after man found dead in Phoenix with ‘obvious signs of trauma’

A murder suspect has been arrested after a man was found dead in his Phoenix home on the night of February 25.

The case began after police responded to a gunshot at a residence near 19th Avenue and Bethany Home Road Just after 9 p.m., police said they found Jimmie Montgomery, 64, inside the home, dead with what were described as “obvious signs of trauma”.

Neighbors in the area told officers they had not seen or heard from Montgomery for several days prior to the reported shooting.

On March 3, police said Sally Macias, 40, had been arrested in connection with the case.

Macias, who was Montgomery’s girlfriend, told police she killed Montgomery and, according to court documents, there were other incidents of domestic violence at that home.

Macias told police that Montgomery pulled her to the ground and then back up. She reported running to the kitchen, grabbing a gun and shooting him in the chest. She said she did not believe Montgomery would have killed her or physically harmed her.

Family members react to suspect’s arrest

On March 4, we spoke with the victim’s sister and niece. They helped the police find the suspect, and now they want justice for their loved one.

“It was very, very hard, because I was the last to see him. It didn’t make sense that he was killed like that,” Montgomery’s niece Akila Dancer said. “He was very outgoing, very helpful, funny. He loved all his family and friends.”

The dancer said she knew something was wrong when her uncle didn’t respond to any of her messages. She had seen him only a few days before his death.

“There was this young lady in the house,” Dancer said. “She gave off a bad vibe. She even attacked me because she thought I was something I wasn’t. I was her niece.”

This woman, as we now know, is Macias, Montgomery’s girlfriend. Macias was arrested after Montgomery’s sister tracked her down to an area hotel.

“Of course she’s waiting, and as soon as we confirmed it was her, we called the police,” Montgomery’s sister said.

Police officials said when Macias was arrested they found methamphetamine, which Macias admitted to taking several times a day. Macias faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder and possession of a dangerous drug.
