With conical wood-tiled roofs that reach almost to the snow-covered ground of a small walled garden, these pretty cottages scattered across the high plain of the Velika Planina have a cute appearance that belies their hard-nut origins. These were the traditional huts of one of the largest shepherd settlements in Europe, dating back to the 16th century. Even now, cows are taken out to pasture here in the summer. La Clusaz, French Alps

This 18th-century log cabin is typical of the Walsers, settlers who moved to the Swiss Alps in waves of migration from the 10th century and who have their own culture and dialect.
