5 people rescued from freezing waters of Lake Minnesota

Spicer, MN (KROC-AM News) – Firefighters in a western Minnesota town sprung into action last night to rescue five people from cold water in a lake.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office reports that deputies responded around 10 p.m. last night after receiving a report of a capsized boat on Green Lake near Spicer. A press release says the boat was about 300 meters from shore.

There were five occupants of the boat and none of them were wearing life jackets. The sheriff’s office says they were able to climb onto the bottom of the capsized boat and were rescued by members of the New London Fire Department.

Three of them, all teenagers, were taken by ambulance to Willmar Hospital for examination as they showed signs of hypothermia. The other two people on the boat apparently did not need medical attention. The National Weather Service said the temperature at the time of the incident was only in the upper 30 degrees.
