Emmanuel Macron has received the 500 sponsorships needed to run for the presidential election

He is not yet a candidate but he has his sponsorships. Emmanuel Macron has already received 529 sponsorships from elected officials, according to the updated count, Thursday, February 3 by the Constitutional Council on its website. Either above the bar of 500 sponsorships necessary to be able to stand in the presidential election.

According to the entourage of the Head of State in World, these sponsorships are also distributed in thirty different departments, another sine qua non condition for being a candidate. Two months before the presidential election – the first round takes place on April 10 – this is one more opportunity for the opposition to criticize the ambiguous status of “almost candidate” of Mr. Macron, accusing him of campaigning with the means of the State while temporizing on a possible announcement.

“Masked Candidate”

But while the president is increasing his trips to France – in Creuse and Haute-Vienne last week, in Hauts-de-France on Wednesday… – the boss of the Les Républicains party, Christian Jacob, criticized a situation “not far from the embezzlement of public funds”. “The president will not be able to hide forever like a masked candidate”, judge, for his part, the president (LR) of the Senate, Gérard Larcher. For his part, the environmental candidate, Yannick Jadot, is frustrated not to see Emmanuel Macron return to the campaign definitively. “This President of the Republic, entrenched at the Elysée, or in very organized outings, is more feverish than serene in this presidential election”he revealed.

A way to push Mr. Macron to declare his candidacy. But the head of state seems determined to take advantage of his status to the end, including refusing to debate with his opponents before the first round of the presidential election. On Sunday, government spokesman Gabriel Attal declared himself “skeptical” on the usefulness of such a debate for the tenant of the Elysée, on the grounds that he would find himself on the defensive against “twelve candidates” wanting the charger.

Behind Emmanuel Macron, it is the LR candidate, Valérie Pécresse, who, to date, has obtained the most sponsorships with 324 elected officials, ahead of Anne Hidalgo who has 266. For their part, the far-right candidates are starting timidly with 58 sponsorships for Eric Zemmour and 35 for Marine Le Pen.

As in 2017, the Constitutional Council publishes twice a week – on Tuesdays and Thursdays – the number of sponsorships received and validated for each candidate. Elected officials have until Friday March 4 at 6 p.m. to send the Constitutional Council, by post only, the official form and envelope they authorize from the State. The President of the Constitutional Council, Laurent Fabius, will announce the final list of candidates on Monday March 7, about a month before the first round, that of April 10.
