Latvia has declared Russia a “state sponsor of terrorism” because of the war in Ukraine

“Latvia recognizes Russia’s actions in Ukraine as a targeted genocide against the people of Ukraine,” says the resolution of the parliament of the Baltic states.

Latvia’s parliament on Thursday (August 11) declared Russia a “state sponsor of terrorism” over the war in Ukraine and called on Western allies to impose more comprehensive sanctions on Moscow to end the conflict.

“Latvia recognizes Russia’s actions in Ukraine as a targeted genocide against the people of Ukraine,” said the resolution of the Baltic nation’s parliament.

Western countries should increase their military, financial, humanitarian and diplomatic support to Ukraine and support initiatives condemning Russia’s actions, it added.

Millions of Ukrainians have fled their homes and thousands have died since the Russian invasion in February.

Moscow says it is not deliberately targeting civilians, calling it a “special military operation” aimed at ensuring Russia’s security and protecting Russian-speakers in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said he was grateful for the resolution of the Latvian Parliament.

“Ukraine encourages other states and organizations to follow suit,” Kuleba tweeted. – Rappler.com
